How Are Custom Grillz Made? From Dental Impression to Finished Piece

Custom grillz are made specifically for the wearer's teeth. Although exact workshop methods vary by design and maker, a bespoke process normally begins with capturing the shape of the teeth and ends with finishing and checking the completed piece.

1. Consultation and design

The process starts by deciding which teeth the grill will cover, the gold specification, colour, surface style and whether diamonds or other stones will be included.

2. Capturing the fit

An impression or suitable dental scan records the relevant tooth geometry. Accuracy at this stage matters because the design is subsequently developed around that information.

3. Model and design development

A working model is produced and the grill is shaped around the selected teeth. Depending on the project, digital design and traditional jewellery techniques may both be used.

4. Manufacturing

The piece is produced in the selected precious-metal alloy. It is then refined, cleaned and adjusted as required before final finishing.

5. Stone setting and polishing

For iced-out or diamond-set grillz, stones are set after the underlying piece has been prepared. The grill is then polished and inspected.

6. Final fit

The finished piece should correspond to the model created from the customer's fit information. Custom grillz are removable jewellery and should not be confused with permanent dental restorations.
